The Heavy Equipment Mechanic (HEM) is responsible for the diagnostic and repairs of military/civilian light, medium and heavy wheeled equipment. Works within a team of other mechanics and radar technicians. Troubleshoots malfunctions, and repair, rebuild and maintain heavy equipment. Operate and inspect machines or equipment to diagnose defects, dismantle and reassemble equipment, using hoists and hand tools, examine parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges, replace defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, and test overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiency.
Major Job Activities:
Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on wheeled vehicles and trailers equipment.- Inspects, tests, and operates wheeled equipment (commercial and military) to determine equipment serviceability and proper operation.
- services equipment with fuel, oil, water, coolant, hydraulic fluid, refrigerant, and compressed air, disassembles and assembles malfunctioning accessories and components.
- Removes, disassembles, repairs, cleans, treats for corrosion, assembles, and reinstall components and accessories.
- Disposes of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with all state, local, and federal environmental standards and regulations.
- Operates, cleans, inspects, and services wheeled equipment for maintenance purposes.
- Practices good housekeeping, property accountability control, Foreign Object Damage prevention and safety at all times.
- Additional responsibilities include working with a variety of repair and test equipment including welders, torches, pressure testers, electrical testers and various other test equipment.
- Assists Radar Technicians as required with installation, maintenance and repair of Radar systems as needed with training and direction provided.
- Performs other duties as assigned to meet organizational/operational objectives.
- Job duties and responsibilities may change due to contractual requirements.
- The Heavy Equipment Mechanic receives guidance and direction as necessary from the Program Manager, FSR and/or Maintenance/Radar Technician Lead with regards on policies, directives and professional development.
Material & Equipment Directly Used:
Extensive use of basic shop equipment, diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, and lifting devices. Steel toe shoes are required.- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required in certain areas while work is being conducted. Such PPE includes, but is not limited to: face mask (covering nose and mouth), head, foot, hand, vision and hearing protective devices.
- Periodic use of computer systems and multi-function devices (MFD).

Education / Certifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent. One year related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if degree is required.- Must possess a valid State Driver’s License.
- Applicant must furnish their own serviceable, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliant, tools, that are appropriate for their required duties. Tools must meet the OSHA Regulations 1910 Subpar P
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
Experience / Skills:
Three (3) to six (6) years' of experience in wheeled equipment maintenance or equivalent.- Must be proficient in servicing, troubleshooting and repairing military and civilian wheeled equipment.
- Must be familiar with the use of electronic technical manuals.
- Customer Service skills perferred.
